The Hunyad Castle in Hunedoara, Romania is believed to be the place where Vlad III of Wallachia (commonly known as Dracula) was held prisoner for 7 years after he was deposed in 1462.
The U-bahn has been endlessly fascinating lately. While my train was paused at Strausberger Platz, this rather innocuous, bespectacled man walked alongside all the windows of my train car with an paper sign reading “Ausgang” [in English: exit] with an arrow. Even more confusing was that some people appeared to dart off the train. While I was sitting there worrying about terror plots, others on the train were pulling out their tickets to be checked by a sketchy-looking man wearing a fannypack. I *think* Ausgang man was warning passengers that the reviled ticket checkers were entering the train! Brilliant. Hope this recession-conscious trend continues.

“Our reactions to other people’s excesses reveals to us what our conflicts are. I don’t want to be a suicide bomber, but I may want to have something in my life that is so important to me that I would risk my life for it….The excesses of other people….can make us think, rather than merely react.”
