I ditched Manhattan and weak dollar writing gigs for Berlin, euros and everything else. Apart from some odd occasions where I’ve pined for bargain books or Law and Order reruns, I can’t say I miss America at all. All incoming and outgoing flights have been cancelled. We do not know when flights will resume. While we have conveyed our deep concern with these closures to the Thai authorities and remain hopeful that the airports will reopen in the near future, ultimately it is a situation that can only be resolved by those involved.

The dowside:

My plane (I had a connecting flight to Chiang Mai via Bangkok) rerouted to Phuket - the southernmost part of Thailand - for one day, and then to Pataya, where I then had to get on a 14 hour bus to the Northern capital. This bus had NO BATHROOMS. And a 40-year-old crusty German backpacker stole my mobile (what is this, the nineties?)! Um, yeah: hell.

The upside:

Chiang Mai is awesome! Also, the Thai Foreign Ministry has arranged for credited compensation of 2000 Thai baht credit per day for hotels and meals at hotels. So, since I’m staying with a friend of my sisters, I’m just going to use my credit to eat at fancy hotel restaurants. Score.

Maxi Geil & Playcolt - Making Love in the Sunshine
